What is a WAS Lock?
"WAS" stands for Western Australian Services – the shared master key network used by the state's utility providers. A WAS lock is the mandatory, state-approved cam lock cylinder fitted to meter box enclosures so authorised staff can reach gas, electricity and water infrastructure without ever needing a key from you.
It's most commonly required on regional and semi-rural properties, where meter boxes often sit outside the standard metro fit-out, including freestanding enclosures, farm gates and shared-access utility pits. If your enclosure doesn't already carry an approved cylinder, it may not meet current access requirements.
- Regional and rural meter box enclosures
- Shared or roadside utility access points
- Properties without a standard metro meter box fit-out
- Enclosures previously fitted with a non-approved padlock
Why is a WAS Lock Required?
Standard hardware-store padlocks aren't cut to the master key carried by utility staff. When an inspector or meter reader can't open a non-approved lock, the usual outcome is that it gets cut off on the spot – leaving your enclosure unsecured until you organise a replacement.
A WAS lock solves this with a shared master key system: your cylinder is cut to the same profile used across the network, so Synergy, Western Power and other authorised crews can open it with their master key, while everyone else stays locked out. You get continuous security without ever blocking a legitimate access visit.
- Non-approved padlocks are routinely cut off without notice
- Your enclosure is left unsecured until a replacement is fitted
- Repeat call-outs and replacement locks add ongoing cost
- Non-compliant locks can be flagged on a utility inspection
Who Has Master Key Access?
Every WAS lock we install is cut to the same shared master key system used by Western Australia's utility providers.
Synergy
WA's primary electricity retailer can access your meter box with the shared master key for meter readings and account-related visits.
Western Power
The network operator responsible for poles, wires and meter infrastructure keeps master key access for safety checks, faults and emergency works.
Authorised Utility Staff
Accredited meter readers, inspectors and emergency crews use the same master key system, so your lock never blocks essential access.

Fast, friendly service. Pleasant to deal with on the phone. I wasn't going to be present during installation and left the decision on which boxes needed locking with Shaun — he handled it perfectly.

Saw someone in the neighbourhood use Shaun and I'd been wanting to get mine done. Called him and was lucky he was close by — got mine done the same day. Great workmanship, the window is clear and meters are now safe. Highly recommend.
